The following is Ali Pica’s artist statement:

North to South: Hearts to Spades is a series of photography I captured within my journey throughout the United States. I believe traveling has shaped me as an artist and individual—every place has something to teach us. My journey has inspired the way I see angles, such as ornate moldings on historical buildings, the feel of Spanish moss on tree limbs, to peoples’ faces as they give directions to those whom are lost. In my work, I aim to extrapolate beauty from the seemingly simplistic. Consequently, I my goal is to demonstrate how looking through a tiny viewfinder on a camera can expand our perception of the world and its history.

As far as hearts to spades, I feel symbols can be powerful things. I have enjoyed playing card games since I was a child, especially with my grandfather, who traveled across the country as a truck driver for many years. As an adult, I find card suits fascinating and appreciate the spiritual symbolism behind them. Hearts can be considered as a “spring” of life sort of speak, and spades moreover as a “winter,” or gaining experience over time. Hence, I believe this card suit symbolism represents my path as an artist.

My background and inspiration as an artist stem from my years as a creative writer. As a fiction writer, I embrace magical realism, which I detail how images can elicit and change our experience. Originally, I saw photography as a vehicle to articulate my thoughts, and as a multifaceted artist, channeled my photos into other works. However, I have gained a passion for the medium and currently find it to be a focal point of my artistic expression.
